Switching from WordPress

This guide is for domains registered with WordPress.com. First a quick check to make sure that's what you have, then it's a simple case of turning off the transfer lock, getting your authorisation code, and sending both to us.

Is your domain actually with WordPress.com?

This guide is for domains registered with WordPress.com, which you'll find under Upgrades, then Domains, in your WordPress.com dashboard.

If you have a self-hosted WordPress site (WordPress.org), your domain is almost certainly with a separate company like GoDaddy or Namecheap. Use that company's guide instead. If the domain isn't listed under Upgrades then Domains, it isn't with WordPress.com.

1. Turn off the transfer lock

In your dashboard, go to Upgrades, then Domains, and click your domain.

Click the Transfer button, then under 'Transfer to another registrar' switch 'Transfer lock on' off.

2. Get your authorisation code

Click Get authorization code. WordPress.com emails the code to the domain's contact address.

If it doesn't arrive, check the contact address under Update contact information. It may be different from your account email.

3. Send us the details

Send us your domain name and the authorisation code, and we'll start the transfer for you.

4. Approve, and we'll take it from there

WordPress.com emails you a confirm link after we start. Confirming it can complete the move the same day, otherwise it takes about 5 to 7 days.

Rather keep it at WordPress.com and point it to us?

You can leave the domain at WordPress.com and point it to us with custom nameservers.

Go to Upgrades then Domains, open the domain, click Name servers, switch off 'Use WordPress.com name servers', enter the ones we give you, and click Save custom name servers.

Using your domain for email?

If you use your domain for email, tell us before you change anything so we can set it up to keep working.

Before you start

A domain can't be transferred within 60 days of being registered or last transferred. During a transfer, your nameservers, DNS and contact details are locked, so make any changes before you start.

If you're not sure, tell us and we'll check.
